After reading the blog posted by xuan on Nov 6th titled Gay marriage ban looks to have passed in California, but is it legal I read the article and wanted to comment but couldn’t figure out how to post a comment by the original blog so I figured I’d create a new post and share my opinion in response to theirs.
The article talks about how gay people are reacting to what appears to be a 52% win for proposition 8. They are feeling like the issue is too close to call and they want to wait for all the ballots to be accounted, including the absentee ballots. Because it appears that Prop 8 has won several lawsuits have been filed in the courts of California stating they feel that the proposition may be illegal.
In your blog you state “Sexual orientation should be one’s own business without other people and especially the government telling them what’s right or wrong.” I agree sexual orientation is one’s own business until it affects other people. Approving gay marriage has significant affects on others. It’s not just saying yes gay couples can marry it is saying it is now “normal” and everyone must accept it regardless of their own beliefs. If gay marriage had won religions would have been affected having to accept gay marriages which contradict their beliefs. Which I don’t feel is right, religion (whatever religion) is religion and shouldn’t be changed.
You also stated “saying no to proposition 8 will relieve us all of frustration and anger.” I have to disagree with this statement. After reading an article titled what same-sex “marriage” has done to Massachusetts (see blog post), I’ve read what legalizing gay marriage has done to their state. It has caused frustration to parents who don’t want homosexuality taught to their children in school for starters. It has taken away the parents rights to choose. If you’d like to read the article for yourself you can find it at www.massresistance.org
Finally you said, “No religion or even government should have a right to say same sex marriage is wrong.” This statement bothers me, because it sounds to me that you are saying religion shouldn’t govern people’s lives but isn’t that why people join or convert to a religion to have basic beliefs to help pattern their lives after?? And because a religion doesn’t agree with your beliefs doesn’t make it wrong. As for Government I don’t believe it was the Governor or President who banned gay marriage it was the majority of the people. And isn’t this what the democracy is all about, the voice of the people??
